Fighting words: The Search

Fighting Words: The Big Story for The Big Picture: The Search

3rd class were invited to attend a writing workshop in Glencree hosted by Fighting Words back in October 2017. The children were delighted to head off on an adventure outside of school. This however was no ordinary workshop as the children were given the task of writing chapter two of the book entitled ‘The Search’. The children also drew marvellous illustrations for the book.

Only a few schools in the country were given the opportunity to write a chapter of the book. How exciting and also to be a young budding author and illustrator at the age of 8 and 9 years old!!!

The children were also invited to the launch of the book in Fighting Words headquarters in Dublin City Centre in January 2018. After we passed through the magical bookcase which was actually a revolving door, we got to meet another school from Baldoyle who wrote chapter one.

Then 3rd class from St. Fergal’s had to read their chapter from the book which was chapter two ‘The Library’.  Afterwards the children ate some lovely cupcakes and collected some signatures from famous authors and illustrators such as Roddy Doyle, PJ Lynch and many of the talented illustrators and volunteers. The children were also given a copy of the book. RTÉ even showed up to film the book launch too!!

The Search tells the story of Callie and Will, who run away from an orphanage in Drogheda, in a bid to find their parents, with evil Sister Mary Petunia in hot pursuit.

Here are some photographs from the book launch day. A great day was had by all.

4th class tour of Dalkey Castle -Ms.Keyes

Today we went on a trip to Dalkey Castle. We got a tour of the castle and learned about murder holes, feasts and life during the Norman times. When we were in the old church, a slave that had escaped from Dalkey island ran in and gave us a fright but we gave him sanctuary and then he was free! We had great fun and learned a lot!

We went up on the roof of the castle. It was a fantastic look-out for enemies coming in from the sea or the hills!

This man was a doctor, barber and a dentist!

Venetian Masks in 4th class- Ms. Keyes

We have been studying Italy in 4th class. We loved learning about Venice and even got to travel around it on a gondola on google maps! For art we designed and painted venitian masks! People living in Venice used to spend most of the year wearing these masks as a disguise but now they are mostly just worn at Carnival.

Christmas Carol Performance :)

Today Ms Walsh's 1st Class had our Christmas Performance! The children worked very hard to learn lots of songs and rhymes, both in English and as Gaeilge. I am very, very proud of them all as they did a super job and really gave it socks!! We had a great time preparing for it and I hope the Mammys, Daddys, Nanas and everyone else who was able to make it had a great time too!

Take a look at our fabulous performers!! :)

Roots of Empathy

Ms Walsh's first class have been really lucky this year as we have gained a  brand new teacher! Baby Finn (our new teacher) has been visiting our class every few weeks to help us learn about empathy - to understand how other people feel and to learn more about our own feelings. We absolutely LOVE when Baby Finn and Mammy Kelly come to visit us! Just look at our faces!!!
