Be Well Month

In January throughout the school we focus on Be Well Month. Each week has a different focus. One focus is Healthy body. We focus on moving our body a little bit every day in a variety of different ways. The second focus is Healthy Eating. We look at a balanced diet and meal and the importance for our health and wellbeing. The Third focus is healthy mind where we explore how to look after our mind by looking at activities such as mindfulness, yoga and gratitude. The Final week is a culmination of all our learning and exploring how we can continue these habits throughout the year to help keep us healthy and happy throughout the coming year.

Peace Proms

For the last two years our Fifth classes have been lucky enough to participate in the Peace Proms show in the RDS. Peace Proms is comprised of a cross border orchestra of young students who prepare a wide variety of music, including traditional, classical, pop and dance music. The Fifth class children learn a large number of songs and actions to perform with the orchestra. 2000 different primary school children perform with the orchestra at each concert they perform. We performed in the RDS. Its an amazing event for both parents and children.

After School Sports

We are lucky enough to have Kildare and Wicklow Sports Promotion Unit come in and support our after school sports activities with the Fifth and Sixth Classes. They encourage and promote physical activity and how it came support a heathy body and mind. They explore a wide variety of games and skills that work in a variety of different sports and activities that a number of children participate in outside of school.

Bray School Garden Competition

We are lucky enough to have an amazing school garden. Joe our school caretaker with Dennis, a volunteer, work hard to support and teach our children about how to care for and look after a wide variety of plants, fruits and vegetables. We also have an amazing wormery that they children help to maintain. With our amazing garden we have been lucky enough to win the Bray School Garden Competition. Thank you so much for your help around the year to keep our garden looking fresh Joe and Dennis.

Creative Schools

Our school were lucky enough to take part in Creative Schools this year. As part of this, children got exposure to some lovely creative activities. Some children have been brought to the theatre in the Mermaid, some participated in a circus skills workshop and others participated in drama workshops. It has been amazing to see the creativity of the children come out in a variety of ways.

Fighting Words

Each year several classes from St. Fergal’s are invited to attend a creative writing workshop called ‘Fighting Words’. It was set up by Roddy Doyle and Sean Love and is run by volunteer authors and illustrators. Children work collaboratively in a fun setting to create a storybook unique to their class. Each child gets a copy of this storybook to take home. In 2018 St. Fergal’s school was invited to be one of four schools in Ireland taking part in the Big Story Project and was featured on RTE’s Nationwide programme. Amber Flag

The Amber flag was initiated by Pieta House to support peoples well being. The idea behind it is to break down stigma around mental health, build compassion and empathy, but also to support mental resilience. We worked hard to receive our Amber flag and we continue to support childrens well being and understanding throughout the school year.

Active School Flag

Our School received its Active Schools Flag. We encourage and support the children to be physically active as often as we can and to enjoy the movement. We promote movement in a fun, positive and inclusive way and encourage the children to have a voice in ways they might like to use their bodies throughout the school day.
